The twelve-story stairwell tells the illustrious history of both the property’s hundred-year transformation and Portland through archival photos and fun facts.
The Benson Hotel, a 287-room property located near Portland’s iconic Pearl District, operated and managed by Coast Hospitality, has announced the unveiling of its new “Historic Stairwell” exposition. The twelve-story original marble stairwell now showcases photographs of the property’s history, as well as that of Portland. This museum-like permanent exhibition was developed to honor the iconic past of The Benson and Portland, as well as to provide a truly authentic and unique guest experience. “We are excited to tell our story in this distinctive way,” said George Schweitzer, Managing Director of the Benson. “The Historic Stairwell will create an memorable experience for our guests, immersing them in the rich history of Portland and The Benson Hotel.”
A Portland landmark, The Benson Hotel is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1912, it has endured over 100 years of transformation, with many notable and celebrated moments. The stairwell features photographs of how founder and designer Simon Benson and architect A. E. Doyle built the hotel, as well as its metamorphosis over the decades. The exhibit also includes images of over 50 other famous Portland landmarks, dating back to 1847. Guests are invited to learn interesting facts about the city, including
how it got its name, the origins of the century-old annual Rose Festival and why SW Broadway was once called “the brightest street in the world.”
The Benson has always attracted big names: film stars, musicians, athletes and nearly every US president since William H. Taft, all of whom have experienced the property firsthand and have left an imprint on the hotel through memories and photographs. These rare images are now displayed in the Historic Stairwell, where guests can learn about who roamed the very same halls years ago.
The Benson offers 287 tastefully appointed guest rooms, including a variety of suites; 18,000 square feet of meeting space; and abundant amenities. Whether its guests are traveling for pleasure or business, The Benson offers comfort, luxury and proximity to all Portland has to offer.
